Community Stakeholders Learn Skills on Post-Conflict Peace Building in Yobe State

A one-day workshop was held in Damaturu, Yobe State, to enhance the capacity of community stakeholders on reconciliation and reintegration in the post-conflict context.

The workshop was organized by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Yobe State Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee (YB-ADRC), with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

It brought together state and local government ADRC members, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other relevant actors from eight local government areas of the state.

The workshop took place at the Brick Point Hall of GAAT Hotels Damaturu and was officially opened by the Secretary to the State Government Baba Malam Wali, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Admin and General Services Abdul-Karim Mai Umar. He stressed the importance of the workshop in fostering community-based reconciliation processes and urged the participants to share the knowledge gained with their communities to sustain and promote peace.

The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr. Muhammad Goje, and the Community Mobilization and Reintegration Specialist for UNDP, Hajiya Yakaka Bukar Mandara, also spoke at the workshop. They said that the workshop aimed to equip community stakeholders with technical skills on reconciliation and reintegration in the post-conflict situation.

The State Chairman of YB-ADRC, Ustaz Baba Hana M. Kyari, welcomed the participants and highlighted the achievements of the committee in resolving over two thousand nine hundred disputes amicably across the seventeen local government areas of the state. He commended the efforts of UNDP in supporting the state government’s commitment to rebuilding harmonious coexistence among citizens under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni.

The workshop featured presentations on topics such as General Overview of Post Conflict and Recovery Process, Strengthening Community based Dispute/Conflict Resolutions Mechanisms, Peace Building in Post Conflict: Role of Stakeholders and The Concept of Reconciliation and Reintegration in Post Conflict. It also included an interactive session where participants exchanged views and experiences on the issues discussed.
