Balarabe Lawal, Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, has sounded the alarm on the disappearing Lake Chad, one of the world’s 10 largest lakes.
Speaking at the UN climate conference COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Lawal stressed that the lake’s shrinking is a direct result of climate change, and called for urgent global action to address the crisis.
The minister warned that the situation affects not only Nigeria, but also neighboring countries like Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. He emphasized that Lake Chad’s disappearance is a global problem, requiring international cooperation to save it.
Lawal also addressed other pressing environmental challenges in Africa, including Nigeria’s severe deforestation, with forest cover currently at just 3%, far below the required 25%.
He urged developed countries to increase their climate finance commitments, as Africa grapples with the devastating impacts of climate change, including flooding, desertification, and rising sea level.
