Ogun State Government has taken steps to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on its workers and pensioners.

The Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, announced that each public servant and pensioner will receive an N10,000 cash palliative for an initial period of three months.

He said, “This measure aims to support the workers during these economic challenges resulting from the fuel subsidy removal. The payment of the palliative will commence from July, and vulnerable citizens will also receive food palliatives from the state government.”

He added that the state government has approved hazard allowances for health and medical personnel, as well as peculiar allowances for public servants.

Tokunbo said letters of promotion for 2021 and 2022 will be immediately released, and March and April 2023 leave bonuses will be paid to public servants.

Also, to ease the burden of increased fuel prices on public servants, the state’s ministries, departments, and agencies will ensure that 2per centre of their staff members are off-duty daily.

Kanempress reported that the Gateway Trading Company has been tasked with establishing food distribution outlets across the state, selling food items at pre-subsidy removal market rates.

In response to President Bola Tinubu’s war on food insecurity, the state is also creating a commodity exchange to optimize investments in the agro-allied sector of the economy.

Similarly, to mitigate transportation costs, state-owned mass transit buses, staff buses, and current public transportation buses will be converted to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

New CNG buses charging fares comparable to pre-subsidy removal rates will also be introduced.
